Review: Bang Bang Racing

Bang Bang Racing

Developer: Digital Reality

Publisher: Digital Reality

Platforms: PSN, XBLA, PC

Release Date: June 5th - 8th 2012

Pros:

- It's fun in short bursts.

- Tracks are challenging in the second half while still maintaining the 'fun' factor.

Cons:

- Little content, maximum of 3 hours of gameplay.

- Split-screen multiplayer only, no online mode to test your skills.

- Very little differences between each car. Most of it seems cosmetic.

- NO GRAPHICAL FIDELITY OPTIONS FOR THE PC VERSION, YOU'RE ONLY ABLE TO CHANGE THE RESOLUTION!

Overall:

No matter what way you look at it BBR is overpriced. $10 is too much for the amount of content given and with zero replay value once you finish the career and competition modes there's no reason for you to have it installed.

Bang Bang Racing is this small little racing game on Steam, that pretty much has no following, or for that matter loads of media behind it at all. To be honest, I can see why.

BBR kind of serves as this mix-up between Hot-Wheels and standard arcade racing. You have four different class racing tiers with six different cars in each. There's not too much variation involved aside from cosmetic differences. One can turn better, the other has more nitrous, and another can accelerate faster. There's little deviation between them all so you're most likely going to pick 2 or 3 different cars for each class.

As you go up in racing tiers the difficulty climbs a lot. The cars you get are much faster and the tracks require way more precision. Once you reach the fourth and final tier your skills definitely need to be honed. There are more vigorous turns and obstacles to dodge that are cleverly placed. What also keeps on your toes is the rubberband AI. There's very little times where a computer opponent is unable to catch up since they always seem to speed up at just the right moments.

After an hour you'll notice there's very little content overall. There's no online multiplayer with only split screen multiplayer available. There's nothing else besides career mode and competitions so you're stuck with a maximum of 3 hours or less of content to experience on Normal.

The Hot Wheels element comes in from the graphics. The cars look tiny and squished, the people are circle meshes with a cutesy look, and the tracks look simple. Nothing overcomplicated. It runs really nice at a constant 60 FPS. For the PC version there's only ONE option in the graphics settings, resolution. No options for fidelity or even a basic full-screen/windowed option.

The music and sound effects all sound stock. Nothing horrible to the ears but nothing memorable either.

No matter what way you look at it BBR is overpriced. $10 is too much for the amount of content given and with zero replay value once you finish the career and competition modes there's no reason for you to have it installed.

Big thanks to WeAreSLAK for helping me film!
