It’s always sad to see this happen. A small multiplayer-only $10 game that’s excellent for what it packs in dies after a very little amount of time. The Showdown Effect is the most well-developed 2D party brawler on the PC and what do you know? The online community is in a near-death state.
For the asking price of ten dollars you would think it’s because the game itself is bad. But nope, the entirety of the game’s mechanics are flawless, aside from the now updated falling damage sensitive. Minus that one itty bitty issue plus having only four different maps and you have a solid game on our hands. One that can enjoy it as soon as he gets into a match.
The game plays extremely fluid. Jumping from ceiling to ceiling, building to building, dashing, running, wall sliding, all of it as smooth as butter and at a good framerate to boot! Sure the lack of graphics and control options was a bit of a letdown but the game itself handled extremely well!
Seriously, in motion this game looks and plays great!
The characters, both unlockable and already unlocked are pretty cool. All with a unique personality borrowed from action heroes dating back to the 1980′s with Schwarzenegger films and have a special ability built solely for each character. The environments are very pretty looking, are interactive so it can change the tides of a battle, and despite lack in quantity are varied in theme.
You would figure that with Paradox Interactive backing it and being developed by Arrowhead Game Studios known for Magicka it would sell well and be played often. Especially considering Magicka was a huge success back in 2011, so it’s not one of those independently developed games with a no-name developer/publisher but an established one and well-loved. This game does not buck the trend for low-priced multiplayer-only indie games. They come out with a bang and die quickly. The same happened for “Lead & Gold: Gangsters of the West”, “The Haunted: Hell’s Reach”, and “Plain Sight”. All three were low-priced multiplayer games with quality gameplay and died quickly soon after release.
So how do we fix this? Easy. Make it free-to-play. Hell every game that has gone free-to-play crappy or not has seem some success. From the likes of gaining back a player-base after a not-so-good release like Star Trek Online to fully reviving an IP like “Tribes Ascend” and “Blacklight: Retribution” so why not make a game like this free-to-play? It’s easy, just significantly increase the amount of in-game credits it takes to unlock skins, weapons, and characters, put a micro-transaction system in place, as well as keep a constant production team for the game and it can be way beyond as popular as it was when it first launched.
I think this game deserves it, especially with such potential.
